  1. Have an Egg-Cellent Time Dying Easter Eggs

    March 31, 2009 by michelle

Whether you dip, swirl, or dye ‘em, it’s always fun have to color Easter eggs. It brings out the inner artist in everyone. We recommend inviting some friends over and have an egg dying party.

The key to a successful egg party is to have lots of hard-boiled eggs. Forget how to do this? Then watch this quick, helpful video. Once your eggs are boiled, you can get crackin’.

After Easter, you may find your have a lot of leftover eggs. Peeling eggs is no fun. You must watch this cool video on removing the shell.  Now you can use your perfectly peeled eggs to make one of these recipes.

    Egg Salad

Don’t forget, hard-cooked eggs spoil faster than fresh eggs. When shell eggs are hard cooked, the protective coating is washed away, leaving bare the pores in the shell for bacteria to enter and contaminate it. Hard-cooked eggs should be refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking and coloring. They should be eaten within a week.

  2. Making Whoopie Pies

    March 24, 2009 by susan

We have a debate in our house - are they whoopie pies or homemade oreo cakesters?  Either way, everyone loves them!

    1.  Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

    2.  Mix together 1 3/4 cup flour, 3/4 cup cocoa powder, 1 tsp baking soda, and 1 tsp salt with a spoon.  Set aside.

    3.  Combine 1 cup buttermilk and 1 tsp vanilla.  Set aside.

    4.  Beat 1 stick of softened butter (unsalted) with 1 cup of brown sugar until fluffy.  Add 1 egg and beat until well combined.  Then add buttermilk mixture and beat.  Slowly add flour mixture.

    5.  Place mixture in a freezer bag and squeeze to one corner.  Cut off one corner.  Pipe circles, about 1 1/2 diameter, onto a parchment lined cookie sheet.

    6.  Moisten your finger with water and gently flatten tops.

    6.  Bake for 8 minutes until fluffy.

    7.  Remove onto a wire rack to cool.  Meanwhile, beat 2 cups confectioners’ sugar and 1 stick of unsalted butter (room temp) for two minutes.  Add 1 tsp vanilla and 2 tbsp of heavy cream and continue to beat.  Match up cakes.  Pipe frosting (with another ziplock freezer bag) onto the flat side of one cake.  Top with matching cake.  Repeat until done (should make about 30 whoopie pies).

  4. What does one TRILLION dollars look like?

    March 18, 2009 by michelle

This cool sketch came from pagetutor.com. Check it out!

All this talk about “stimulus packages” and “bailouts”…

    A billion dollars…

    A hundred billion dollars…

    Eight hundred billion dollars…

    One TRILLION dollars…

What does that look like? I mean, these various numbers are tossed around like so many doggie treats, so I thought I’d take Google Sketchup out for a test drive and try to get a sense of what exactly a trillion dollars looks like.

We’ll start with a $100 dollar bill. Currently the largest U.S. denomination in general circulation. Most everyone has seen them, slighty fewer have owned them. Guaranteed to make friends wherever they go.

    $100

A packet of one hundred $100 bills is less than 1/2″ thick and contains $10,000. Fits in your pocket easily and is more than enough for week or two of shamefully decadent fun.

    $10,000

Believe it or not, this next little pile is $1 million dollars (100 packets of $10,000). You could stuff that into a grocery bag and walk around with it.

    $1,000,000 (one million dollars)

While a measly $1 million looked a little unimpressive, $100 million is a little more respectable. It fits neatly on a standard pallet…

    $100,000,000 (one hundred million dollars)

    And $1 BILLION dollars… now we’re really getting somewhere…

    $1,000,000,000 (one billion dollars)

Next we’ll look at ONE TRILLION dollars. This is that number we’ve been hearing so much about. What is a trillion dollars? Well, it’s a million million. It’s a thousand billion. It’s a one followed by 12 zeros.

    You ready for this?

    It’s pretty surprising.

    Go ahead…

    Scroll down…

Ladies and gentlemen… I give you $1 trillion dollars

    $1,000,000,000,000 (one trillion dollars)

(And notice those pallets are double stacked.)

So the next time you hear someone toss around the phrase “trillion dollars”… that’s what they’re talking about. And remember…You’ve Got Supper is FREE!

  8. Go Chic, Go Green, Go Envirosax

    March 9, 2009 by michelle

These environmentally friendly shopping bags rock!  I regularly use them to carry groceries, Target finds, and just about any purchase.  Best of all they, they roll up easily and can fit right inside of your purse!

Here’s a little more info about this green, cool company: “Envirosax is proud to help protect the environment for tomorrow’s generation by providing an eco-friendly alternative to disposable shopping bags that have caused so much damage to the environment worldwide. Envirosax bags are lightweight, portable, waterproof and each one holds the equivalent of two supermarket plastic bags thanks to reinforced seams.

We believe in environmental sustainability. Plastic bags clog drains and cause flooding. They pollute rivers and streams, killing animals and destroying plantlife. They take years to photodegrade and have a very short life span. Envirosax provide a compelling alternative to the plastic bags which are doing so much damage to our planet.”

  10. How to Cook a Spaghetti Squash

    March 3, 2009 by susan
I am fascinated by this vegetable.  Not only the yummy taste but the remarkable similarity to a big bowl of pasta, without the carbs.  It was super simple to make - just sliced it and threw it in the oven (at 350 for about 30 minutes) - and it instantly turned to spaghetti when I scraped out the flesh from the inside with a fork.  All of my kids were engrossed in the entire meal preparation that night.  Here’s a few pics.  You have to try it!
